Distraction and Dysfunction

Unusual and unseemly is one way it’s being described. Dysfunctional is another. The President-elect of the United States is holding a drama-ridden reality TV-style selection process for some of the most important positions in the United States government. People like Rudy Giuliani are openly lobbying in public for the position of Secretary of State to try to box the President-elect in, while the President-elect himself parades contestants through the lobby of his building and then tweets out his impressions of his meetings to get visceral public reaction.

Social Media, Fake News, and Post-Truth Age

On October 24 we ran a post regarding the rise of alt-right, anti-Semitic tweets that originated with self-identified Trump supporters and targeted Jewish journalists. An Anti-Defamation League (ADL) report noted that there is evidence that Trump contributed to the environment in which reporters were targeted, citing Trump’s references to them as “absolute scum,” and his saying, “I would never kill them, but I do hate them. And some of them are such lying, disgusting people. It’s true.”

Christie Out – Alt-Right Rising?

For more than a month, we here at the Muckraker, as well as multiple traditional news outlets have been raising the alarm about the influence of alt-right anti-Semitism and white nationalism in the Trump campaign. Most of the time this has been drowned out by other controversies or brushed off by Trump supporters. Now, however, Republicans themselves have started to express concern.

Anti-Abortion Groups Pledge to Hold Trump to His Promises

Anti-abortion groups have moved quickly to announce they intend to hold Donald Trump to his promises, noting that their efforts on his behalf in critical battleground states were based on those promises. Specifically, given that Republicans control both houses of Congress as well, they expect Trump to promptly defund Planned Parenthood, outlaw abortions after 20 weeks, and fill the Supreme Court with the justices necessary to overturn the 1973 Roe vs. Wade decision.

The Aftermath: Virginia and Prince William County

Donald Trump may lose the national popular vote, but he has won a solid Electoral College majority and will be the next President of the United States. Democrats in that instance will have won the national vote in 6 of the last 7 presidential elections, yet will have gone more than two decades without being able to translate a national win into presidential-term-long simultaneous control of the executive and legislative branches.

ADL Calls Out Alt-Right Anti-Semitism in Trump’s Closing Ad

The Muckraker and numerous other outlets have been commenting for weeks on how alt-right anti-Semitism has infiltrated and taken control of the top ranks of the Trump campaign, thanks to the influence of campaign CEO Stephen K. Bannon, of Brietbart News, the self-professed “platform for the alt-right.” Yet another troubling example of the pernicious and pervasive influence of alt-right anti-Semitism emerged with the widely criticized closing ad of the Trump campaign.

The Alt-Right and Jim Crow 2016 Style

Recent events and court decisions have revealed a disturbing pattern among alt-right forces aligned with Trump (though direct ties to the Trump campaign are absent in some instances). They show a conscious attempt to suppress the minority vote in a 2016 version of the Jim Crow tactics that conservative used to block the black vote for much of the 20th century.

Mac Haddow’s “Polezni Durak”

More than a little has been made about an affinity between Donald Trump and Russia’s Vladimir Putin. Michael Hayden, who was NSA Director and CIA Director during the Bush administration, analyzed that affinity recently in an opinion piece.
